For whatever reason, cosmetic treatments seem to be a popular topic for misinformation. BOTOX is one such treatment – and you may have already thought of several “facts”! Basically, if you’ve been interested in BOTOX but hesitated because of some concerning rumors, there’s good news: many of them simply aren’t true. Keep reading to watch five of the more common ones get checked by reality.
#1. BOTOX is Cosmetic – And Only Cosmetic
Perhaps the most well-known use for BOTOX injections is as an anti-wrinkle solution. While it is quite effective at relaxing facial muscles to smooth out the skin, that’s not the only reason patients might seek it out.
Since BOTOX does relax muscles, it’s actually capable of easing uncomfortable tension. Patients with a TMJ disorder, for example, can often find relief for their jaw through these injections. Who knew that if you’re experiencing pain around your jawbone, you could ask your dentist about a BOTOX treatment?
#2. BOTOX is Dangerous
BOTOX is, in fact, botulinum toxin in a liquid form. Understandably, injecting a bacteria strain into your face doesn’t sound exactly healthy. Indeed, in excessive amounts, it’s not good for you. However, BOTOX is FDA approved – probably because it would take more than 100 times the average dose to be toxic!
#3. Your Face Will Freeze
This myth might have something to do with misconceptions about how BOTOX works. Remember that it relaxes the muscles in your face, not tightens them. You’ll be able to move your face freely and as pointed out, might even feel more comfortable.
#4. The Treatment Process is Painful
You’re unlikely to be in pain during a BOTOX treatment. Your dentist will apply a topical anesthetic to help ensure your comfort, and it’s usually pretty effective – most patients describe the injections as feeling like a pinch. You might have had shots that were more uncomfortable than that!
#5. BOTOX is An Addiction
Not so! If you notice someone frequently visiting their dentist for a BOTOX “touch up”, it’s probably because they need it. The muscle-relaxing, skin-smoothing effects aren’t permanent. Every few months or so, you’ll need more injections to keep wrinkles at bay.
In reality, BOTOX is a safe wrinkle- and jaw-pain solution that has been safely administered for decades. If you’re not quite ready to settle into your crow’s feet or are looking for facial tension relief, talk with your dentist about this cosmetic treatment. They’ll be able to address any questions that might be lingering in your mind and can review the process in more detail. Happy consulting!
