What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers have become one of the most preferred cosmetic procedures because they provide drastic results. By attaching the thin shells to the front surfaces of the teeth, you instantly improve their size, shape, color, and proportion.
They are often the perfect solution to hide chips and cracks, while also giving abnormally shaped teeth a more attractive appearance. Often, they are used for those who have stubborn tooth discoloration that will not respond to traditional whitening treatments. Not only will you achieve a brighter smile, but your results will last because they are resistant to stains.
In some cases, they can also be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatments. You can get the straighter smile you have always wanted by covering minor alignment concerns, like gaps or minimally overlapped teeth.
What is the Process for Receiving Porcelain Veneers?

After your initial consultation with our cosmetic dentist in Mt. Holly, a customized treatment plan is created to begin transforming your smile. First, your teeth are cleaned and prepared by removing a small portion of the enamel. This is necessary to ensure that they sit flush while creating a secure bond. We will then take digital impressions to create your veneers to meet your exact specifications, including their size, shape, and color.
To develop them with precision and accuracy, the information is sent to a dental lab. It will take about two weeks for them to be ready. While you wait, we will attach temporary ones to help you feel more confident. After your new veneers are ready, you will return to our dental office to have the permanent ones bonded in place.
You will walk out of your appointment with your dream smile. With the right aftercare, your results can last for 5 to 10 years before needing to be replaced.

Understanding the Cost of Porcelain Veneers

As one of the most comprehensive cosmetic dental services we offer, you’re likely to expect a higher upfront cost for veneers compared to other options. In most cases, dental insurance won’t cover the price of this treatment because it isn’t deemed medically “necessary.” Still, this doesn’t mean you’ll be out of solutions for minimizing your out-of-pocket expenses. Our team is proud to partner with a third-party financier known as CareCredit, who can easily turn the cost of your procedure into a monthly, low-to-no-interest payment.
Porcelain Veneer FAQs
Is It Painful to Get Veneers?
Before beginning the procedure, our team will typically numb your mouth so that you don’t feel any discomfort or pain during your appointment. We can also provide sedation dentistry if necessary to help you remain relaxed and calm while undergoing the process. While the procedure itself shouldn’t involve any discomfort, it’s normal to feel some sensitivity when first getting your temporary veneers. If you have multiple porcelain shells attached, this might cause some soreness in the gums and/or jaw. This should only be temporary and can easily be alleviated with pain medication like ibuprofen.
Are Veneers Permanent?
Although veneers are designed to last for well over a decade, they aren’t technically considered permanent. This is because they will need to be replaced with new ones in the future. That said, since our team will need to alter your tooth enamel to make space for the porcelain shells, this procedure is considered irreversible. Once enamel is removed it will not grow back, so you’ll need to have your exposed tooth covered from now on with either a veneer or dental crown.
What Happens to the Teeth Under Veneers?
During your procedure, we will only remove the tiniest amount of enamel from your affected teeth so that your custom veneer can be placed. This is necessary so that the porcelain caps don’t appear bulky with the rest of your smile. The veneers will not harm your natural teeth, and the bonding material that we use to fuse your restoration to your pearly whites is also entirely safe. Your underlying teeth will be concealed by the veneers, so you shouldn’t have to worry about an increased risk of cavities. Simply maintain good oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash every day while also visiting your dentist every six months for checkups to make the most of them.
Is There Anything I Can’t Eat with Veneers?
With temporary veneers, you need to stick to only soft foods, like fruit smoothies and plain yogurt. Once your final ones are securely in place, you’ll be able to enjoy a much more varied diet again. All we ask is that you avoid extremely crunchy foods, like hard pretzels, and that sugary snacks are kept to a minimum to prevent cavities from developing. Outside of that, you should be able to enjoy all of your favorite foods with your new and improved smile!
Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?
If you love starting your day with a cup of coffee, don’t worry – you don’t have to give it up just because you have veneers. In fact, veneers are crafted from porcelain and other dental materials that are stain-resistant, so they won’t discolor as quickly as your enamel. Even so, we recommend using a straw to prevent the liquid from coming in contact with your teeth and rinsing your mouth thoroughly with water afterward. If you can, brush your teeth about 20 minutes after too!
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
That depends. Do you want to fix one, noticeable chip? Do you want to enhance the top row of teeth that show when you smile? Do you want a dramatic, new look? Your answer will largely determine if you need one veneer, six veneers, or 12+ veneers!
Can You Whiten Veneers?
During the initial consultation, our team at Mt. Holly Family Dentistry will help you select the perfect shade based on your unique smile goals. We will also share what to do (and what not to do) to keep your veneers in tip-top shape. Of course, if there does come a time when you want a whiter, brighter look, you can always schedule another appointment. Although dental porcelain doesn’t respond well to whitening treatments, we may be able to remove stubborn stains, or we can provide you with new veneers that suit your aesthetic preferences better.
Is There Anyone Who Shouldn’t Get Veneers?
Yes, there are some patients who aren’t candidates for veneers. The good news is that – most of the time – the necessary preliminary care can be provided so their dream smile isn’t out of reach forever. For example, patients who have gum disease shouldn’t get veneers until the infection has been eliminated. Similarly, patients who have severely misaligned teeth should get braces before enhancing the size, shape, and shade with veneers.
Ultimately, if you want to enhance your smile, and you are interested in doing so with veneers, then you shouldn’t hesitate to schedule a consultation at our Mt Holly dental office. That way, we can learn more about your smile goals, review your dental history, conduct an exam, and determine what’s needed to make your dream smile a reality.
